This paper considers the strategic direction embraced by the electricity industry in China, India, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam to get on to a sustainable energy path over the next two decades, including the policy tools and financing mechanisms being adopted to get there. Energy efficiency and renewable energy programmes and projects in Asia are presented for their relevance to the African context, highlighting the manner in which barriers preventing adoption of renewable energy have been addressed.
