Background
Buildings consume around 40% of the country's electrical energy. The need to save on energy should be enough to encourage a change in energy consumption. Surprisingly it is not the case as the bottom line takes precedent.
In South Africa, the generation capacity crisis and dramatic increases in the price of electricity and other energy sources is making the application of these enabling automation technologies both desirable and increasingly economically viable.
The Department of Minerals and Energy and Eskom are intending to introduce their Energy Conservation Scheme (ECS) and Power Conservation Programme (PCP) in 2009, which introduces monthly electrical energy (kWh) allocations and severe penalty tariffs for energy usage above these allocations. These penalty tariffs are such that enegy efficiency and associated automation projects will now produce very exciting returns for building owners and operators, making such automation projects a no-brainer!
