Former Bafana Bafana player Marks Maponyane wowed the audience at the GISSA Gauteng general meeting on 19 June 2009. In keeping with the excitement generated by the FIFA Confederations Cup the theme of the event was “The Confederation of GIS”. Maponyane inspired all with a talk on soccer, its rules and tactics, and on how he has applied the lessons he learnt during his years as a top soccer player to his day-to-day working environment. He stressed the importance of team work and how it can be successfully applied in the work place.
Another highlight of the event was a talk by Mark Kindler (ST Group) who spoke on the Gauteng Department of Community Safety (GDCS) and how they have deployed location business intelligence in support of their activities. Other interesting talks followed with Morena wa Letšosa (Ekhurheleni Metropolitan Municipality) talking on the status of GIS within Ekhurhuleni and Nale Madau (ESI-GIS, Eskom) presenting on GIS and its application within ESI-GIS. Bongani Mahlangu from the National Spatial Information Framework (NSIF) gave a presentation on the new metadata discovery tool (SMD) while
Mike Silberbauer (DWAF/DWEA) spoke on visualisation for survival in a dry environment. Last up was Anthony Cooper (CSIR) who informed the audience about geoinformation perspectives on innovation and economic growth.
