On 29 May 2009, a new IEEE Chapter was added to the IEEE South Africa Section. Similar to other local IEEE chapters, the newly-approved chapter IEEE Systems, Man and Cybernetics (SMC) will continue to serve IEEE members in South Africa by organising at least two technical activities annually.More generally, the mission of the SMC chapter aims to serve the interests of its members and the community at large by promoting the theory, practice, and interdisciplinary aspects of systems science and engineering, human-machine systems, and cybernetics.
The chapter was founded by Dr. Alta van der Merwe, a volunteer of the IEEE South Africa Section. A researcher within the HuFee (Human Factors and Enterprise Engineering) group, Dr. van der Merwe pursues research in the field of enterprise architecture. HuFee is a research group within the Meraka Institute (Council for Scientific and Industrial Research) focusing on issues affecting the development of socio-technical systems, both within enterprises and for the individual.
We welcome the SMC initiative, and look forward to the activities of this IEEE chapter.
