AfriGIS, a leading provider of GIS solutions and location based services (LBS), held their 2009 client event at the Westcliff Hotel in Rosebank on 3 September 2009. Managing Director Magnus Rademeyer explained how the company has grown over the last few years with the staff complement now reaching 150. The company has been involved in a diverse range of projects and has created a number of solutions including datasets of geographical information to customised maps and consulting services. Marius van der Merwe took the audience through the company’s project highlights for 2009 explaining its role in providing assistance to the Independent Electoral Commission, Gautrain, the Department of Human Settlements and the Yellow Pages amongst others. He also expanded on some of the company’s product developments for 2009 which include AfriGIS Spatial Data, PropertySPI, GeoDispatch, MapServer, Intiendo Address Toolset, Online Geocoding, Marbil Mobile Advertising, Mobile Maps, Traffic Information Subscription, and Look4it. Keynote speaker Vincent Maher, Portfolio Manager: Social Networking at Vodacom SA, gave an informative talk on how mapping, local search and LBS all mesh into social networking.  He identified augmented reality, powered by location and blended with social networking, as a development that will change our view of the world. Magnus Rademeyer concluded the event with a look at the road ahead for AfriGIS and expressed his excitement at how mainstream LBS were becoming.
