MEDpages and AfriGIS, a location-based services company, have partnered to launch MEDmaps, a mapping tool that provides the locations of numerous healthcare professionals and healthcare facilities in South Africa. Magnus Rademeyer, AfriGIS MD, says all the healthcare professionals and organisations and facilities have been geocoded into MEDmaps, along with their relevant information. The tool has a number of applications. It is ideal for pharmaceutical companies and companies in healthcare manufacturing who need to find healthcare professionals to deliver medication, medical equipment and so on. Addresses, practice numbers and more are all available within the application. The application is also ideal for the health department not only in terms of keeping track of healthcare professionals and organisations, but also for the purposes of planning locations for proposed licensed healthcare facilities, understanding the demographics of the mix of healthcare providers in relation to the population in that area and so on. It is said to be an ideal tool for planning, especially when it comes to determining the healthcare industry’s ability to respond to disease outbreaks, natural disasters or just the servicing of growing populations within South Africa’s major cities.
