Many power transformers in South Africa operate at and above rated capacity due to rapid growth and development of new industries and residential sites. Over the past 10 years very little or no maintenance has been done on many of these units. An estimated number of over 400 000 transformers are in service throughout the world. The average age is estimated to be between 35 – 40 years, the age of power transformers in South Africa being no exception.
